Eiffel Tower: From Global Famous Architecture to Omoshiroi Block
Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel) is a steel structure located on Champ-de-Mars park, next to the Seine river, Paris city. Originally called the 300 meter Tower (Tour de 300 mètres), this work was designed and built by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his colleagues from 1887 to 1889 on the occasion of the 1889 World Exhibition and also the French Revolution’s 100th anniversary
The Overview of Eiffel Tower
The original height of the building is 300 meters if according to the design, but the antenna on the top helped the Eiffel Tower reach a height of 325 meters. Since its inauguration in 1889, it is the tallest building in the world and has maintained this position for more than 40 years. From the beginning, in addition to the function of tourism, the Eiffel Tower was also used for scientific purposes.
Becoming a symbol of the “capital of light”, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous structures in the world. Since its inauguration until 2007, the tower has had more than 236 million visitors. Particularly in 2007, it welcomed nearly 7 million tourists, maintaining the position of the most attractive toll works in the world.
The Eiffel Tower was originally designed to be the “nail of the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris”, flaunting French construction technologies. In the beginning, the work caused controversy about the aesthetics and functionality … However, the Eiffel Tower still achieved rapid success, becoming the most popular tourist attraction and the number gradually. stable since the 1960s.
The official address of the Eiffel Tower is at 5 Avenue Anatole France, District 7, Paris. Located on the Seine, it is in a straight line that begins from the Palais de Chaillot, through the Trocadéro garden and the river, to the Eiffel and then along the Champ-de-Mars, to the École Militaire and almost directly to the Montparnasse tower. These are all famous works of Paris, completed in different stages. Palais de Chaillot’s courtyard, next to the Trocadéro square, is the best spot to see the tower.
Immediately after the 1889 World Exhibition, the Eiffel Tower was owned by the city of Paris. Currently, the project is managed by the Eiffel Tower Mining Company (Société d’exploitation de la tour Eiffel – SETE). With three floors, the space of the Eiffel Tower is divided among many different services. In total, the Eiffel Tower needs about 500 employees, including 250 SETE employees and 250 employees for the rest of the services. Welcoming tourists from all countries, the Eiffel Tower is open every day of the year, from 9:00 am to 24:00 between June 13 and August 31, and from 9:30 to 23:00, the rest of the time of the year.
Construction of the Eiffel Tower
Initially, Gustave Eiffel planned to be constructed in 12 months. But the actual time has doubled. Construction began on January 28, 1887, and ended in March 1889, just before the World Exhibition officially opened.
On the site, the number of workers never exceeded 250. The reason was that a large portion worked upstream, in the Eiffel Company factory in Levallois-Perret. For example, 2,500,000 studs were made for the tower, but only 1,050,846 were built on-site, representing 42% of the total. The majority of the components are assembled on the ground at the workshop in Levallois-Perret, in five-meter sections with temporary bolts, which are then replaced on-site with thermal studs. Building parts and assembling required 50 engineers to work for two years with 5,300 master drawings or details.
On May 6, 1889, the World Expo opened and by 15 May the public was allowed to visit the Eiffel Tower. During its construction, the work was subject to many disparities, especially in February 1887 it received criticism from some of the greatest artists of that period. However, when inaugurated, the Eiffel Tower gained immediate success, receiving a large number of visitors. The first week, when the elevators were not operational, 28,922 people climbed the tower using stairs. At the end of the fair, among the 32 million visitors of the World Exhibition, 2 million people crowded up this tower.
But after the exhibition ended, the number of visitors dropped rapidly. In 1899, there were only 149,580 visitors. Finally, to promote commercial exploitation of the tower, Gustave Eiffel reduced the entrance fee but did not violate the previous agreements. It took until 1900 World Expo to be held in Paris, and the number of visitors increased again. On this occasion, more than a million tickets were sold, but only half of the number ten years earlier. The extent of the decline is even stronger if, by absolute comparison, the number of visitors at the 1900 World Expo is higher than that in 1889.
In 1901, the number of visitors dropped again, making the future of the tower at stake may not be over December 31, 1909, the time of ceding to Paris. There have been a few comments that the building should be demolished.
Aware of the risks and as planned before construction, Gustave Eiffel agreed to conduct experiments as well as to set up an observatory from the very first year of the tower.
In 1889, Eleuthère Mascart, director of the French Central Bureau of Meteorology, placed an observatory on the Eiffel Tower. In October 1898, Eugène Ducretet first connected the wave signal between the Eiffel Tower and the Panthéon, a distance of 4 km. In 1903, Captain Gustave Ferrié, trying to erect a wireless telegraph network without investment from the military, who still favored the old methods. Gustave Eiffel funded this project and allowed the installation of an antenna on top of the tower. Since 1921, radio programs are broadcast regularly from the Eiffel Tower and Radio Eiffel Tower – Radio Tour Eiffel officially started on 6 February 1922.
In 1925, the Eiffel Tower was used for television, for the first time in France. With the advancement of technology, experimental broadcasts were also conducted between 1935 and 1939. Television went from black and white to color television. In 1959, a new television broadcasting column raised the tower’s height to 320.75 meters. And in 2005, digital terrestrial television was also installed on the Eiffel Tower
Since the 1960s, the number of international tourists has increased, directly leading to the number of people visiting the tower. The annual number of visitors has increased almost steadily since 1970 and first reached 6 million in 1998. This increase has led to the need for renovation and remodeling of the tower. Work carried out from 1980 to 1985, with three main directions:
- Lighten the structure of the building
- Rebuild entire lifts and stairs
- Use new safety measures in accordance with the increasing number of guests
The Eiffel Tower shed 1340 tons of excess, repainted and treated it against corrosion. The lifts are renewed and the restaurant opens a Jules-Verne culinary restaurant. Lighting measures have also been improved.
From the symbol of Paris…
The Eiffel Tower became a symbol of Paris and France, one of the most famous works in the world. Starting in the last decades of the twentieth century, Champ-de-Mars and Eiffel Tower are the venue for festivals and concerts of the city. As of 2007, the total number of visitors to the tower has reached more than 236 million. In 2007, the Eiffel Tower welcomed 6,893,000 visitors.
With its success and architectural imprint, the Eiffel Tower quickly became the symbol of Paris, a city that had many other famous works. Over a century, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous and most attractive works and appears in many works of literature, cinema, painting, photography …
In 1996, the SOFRES institute, the French social investigation agency, conducted an investigation from March 15 to April 2 in Italy, UK, Spain, Germany, the US, and Japan. With the question “Please name three European buildings that you know, even by the name”, the Eiffel Tower topped the results in all six countries. Other famous works of Paris such as the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Versailles castle also achieved high rankings. According to the opinions in the investigation, the Eiffel Tower is also a symbol for Europe and the most visited work by respondents, after the work in their own country.
Around the world, many replicas and simulations of the Eiffel Tower are built. In the United States, the Paris Las Vegas hotel and casino near Las Vegas, Nevada, replicates the famous works of Paris: the Arc de Triomphe, the Opéra Garnier theater, and an Eiffel Tower with a height of 165 meters. Similarly, in Hangzhou, China, a miniature Paris was built with the 108-meter-high Eiffel Tower. Also in China, Shenzhen city also has another replica about 100 meters tall.
In Germany, the radio tower Berlin, the architecture simulating the Eiffel Tower, was built from 1924 to 1926 of steel, 150 meters high. More famously, Tokyo Tower in Japan was completed in 1958, has a height of 333 meters.
